A few days ago I quietly decided to pull back on trolling the comments on posts that contain dangerous misinformation and have just started blocking people. My reason is that what happens with the algorithm is that it sees the activity on the post as an indicator that the post is engagement-worthy and leads to its being shown on more peoples timelines.
The twisted sense of satisfaction and entertainment I get from it isn't worth the chance that someone might see that post indirectly because of something I did, take it at face value, and put theirs or other peoples lives in danger.
Most of these people are "car accident" social media friends anyway, meaning they're not actually friends in any sense, just most of the time their posts are so cringe that it's hard to look away.
